International Day of Happiness – 5 Simple Habits to Find Happiness

Where can I find happiness? It is a question we have all asked ourselves at some point when disappointments came knocking. I hope you all are feeling the warmth of happiness today on the International Day of Happiness. The quest for happiness is not easy. We have to consistently strive towards finding some happiness every day as happiness depends upon ourselves.

In the latest World Happiness Report 2021, India has been ranked 139 out of the 149 countries. Finland, Denmark and Switzerland ranked top three respectively. The report is compiled over a lot of factors such as GDP, social support, personal freedom, and levels of corruption in each nation but personal happiness is in our control. We all have a well organized wish list that we believe will contribute towards our happiness. This attitude of pursuing happiness is not fruitful as it is not likely that life will grant us all our wishes.

The simplest trick to finding happiness is to count the blessings and feel gratitude for the special blessings life has bestowed upon each one of us. Begin each day with a sense of gratitude by acknowledging at least one blessing in your life and you will feel the vibrations of happiness and positivity around you for the rest of the day. Once you begin to look for positive factors in your life, you become more aware of the positivity around you filling you with happiness.

Let’s look at 5 simple habits that you can inculcate to help you find happiness.

Smile and Laugh Often

Make it a habit to smile and laugh without waiting for a reason. It does not mean smiling unnecessarily but to make it a habit first thing in the morning to smile while looking at the mirror. We smile or laugh when we are happy; this causes the brain to release dopamine which makes us happier. Every time you are feeling sad, make some effort to smile, allowing happiness back into your life. Watch your favourite comedy shows or recount funny experiences and laugh out loud. Laughter will always lift up your mood.

Experience Sunshine and Exercise

Exercise isn’t just meant to keep you fit physically but is also a great way to keep your mind happy. Sunshine is an effortless way to find happiness. Sunlight is responsible for the brain producing a chemical called serotonin that affects your mood. The higher levels of serotonin lead to better mood and happiness. So, it is a great idea to go out for a walk or run in the mornings or evenings to get the benefit of both exercise and sunshine to soak in on all the happiness.

Bond with Good friends and Pet

Life is sure to come with its share of challenges and disappointments. The best way to get through them is to face them with courage and sharing them with your good friends. Sharing will help you relieve stress while also providing you a fresh perspective or solution to the problem. Making new friends is a sure shot way at being happy. Immaterial of your social media connections, it is important to have at least two meaningful friends whom you can connect with and who gets you. Having a pet can instantly leave you feeling happier. Be it a cat or dog, the beautiful bonding and their wonderful antics will leave you feeling happy and blessed.

Get Adequate Sleep

Sleep is one of the most effortless and easiest routes to finding happiness. Most adults require about 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. We seldom get the required sleep with the modern way of life and the demands of the digital devices. Sleep deprivation increases stress levels, body weight and also causes illness. So, make sure to get the adequate sleep required for a happier, healthier living. Experience the magic of rejuvenation mentally and physically after a week of adequate sleep for your body.

Live in the Present and Volunteer

Most of the stress in our life is created by worrying about a distant future over which we have little control. Once you accept the fact and start living with savouring the present moment, you are on the path towards happiness. Also take time to help out someone in need as it is very helpful to your mental health. Regularly volunteering to help is a great way to create happiness all around, leaving you feeling good about yourself and cheering you up.

May God bless you with all the happiness and in the meanwhile, keep working towards happiness.
